Why We're Making Event Planning Open Source
Building community is a fundamental human need, especially in our local spaces. It’s as essential as the air we breathe or the food we eat. When people come together around shared interests and passions in their neighborhoods, towns, and cities, something magical happens - connections form, ideas flourish, and lives improve.
This belief in the power of community is why we’re making OpenMeet open source. We think that if we have the means to help people fulfill this basic need for connection, it should be freely available to everyone.
There’s something beautiful about opening the door for anyone in the world to contribute. Maybe someone in a small town will build exactly the feature their local art group needs. Perhaps a developer in Singapore will solve a problem that helps communities in Brazil. By making OpenMeet open source, we’re saying we don’t want to be gatekeepers - we want to be enablers.
The open source community itself is one of the world’s most vibrant examples of people coming together around shared interests. We’ve benefited immensely from open source software, and we believe the OSS community could benefit from better tools for organizing events and managing interest groups. It feels right to give back to a community that has given us so much.
This isn’t just about code - it’s about fostering connections. When you make something open source, you’re saying that you trust in the collective creativity and goodwill of others. You’re saying that the best ideas can come from anywhere, and that innovation thrives when barriers are removed.
We’re excited to see what people will build with OpenMeet. Whether you’re a developer looking to contribute code, a community organizer seeking better tools, or someone who simply believes in the power of bringing people together - there’s a place for you here.
Let’s build something meaningful together, openly and transparently.
