About OpenMeet

Meetup charges $24/month. We think that's wrong.

After Meetup got acquired, they raised prices. Now it costs hundreds of dollars a year just to host a book club or a hiking group. That's a barrier to community — and it doesn't have to be this way.

I'm Tom — a husband, father, and software developer with over 25 years of experience, living in Louisville, Kentucky. I built OpenMeet because I believe the tools for bringing people together should be free.

OpenMeet is open-source, which means the community has control. We didn't build it to get rich — we built it to enrich communities. It's owned by its contributors, can't be bought or shut down, and we like to call it "billionaire-proof."

We also built OpenMeet to be secure. Your private information about contacts and events stays private. No harvesting, no selling, no ads.

It's time to reach out to our neighbors and build stronger communities. I hope OpenMeet helps you do that.

Want to help us work on OpenMeet?

We work with ATproto which is the protocol that BlueSky uses. We are looking for more users, partners, and contributors. If you're a community member, you can reach out and help us with beta testing and connecting us into your community. If you're a coder, designer or otherwise interested in helping, you're welcome to come and join the project.
